Chapter 14

The winds tossed me and my broomstick around as if we were a wisp of smoke—blowing me off course more than once on my way to The Chamber. The rain pelted me harder than ever. The Residuals of the counter-curse potion clung to me, as if they, too, were fighting back against the rain with everything they had.

Within seconds of taking off, I’d gotten drenched. My hair was soaked, plastered to my face. My clothing clung to me. My grip on the broomstick was slick at best. Still, I raced on, deeper and deeper into the storm until I reached my target.

Beneath me, a fire raged, held back somewhat by the rain—a small blessing, if I were looking for one. As I circled, looking for a place to land, I noted that half of The Chamber had been demolished. Insofar as I could tell, however, the portion that housed Matthew’s body was still somewhat intact, though it looked to be on the verge of crumbling to shambles.

It was from that section, the section where Matthew had been kept, that a glow originated. It pulsed gently, a golden sort of glow mixed with a swirl of darkness. Yin and yang. Life and death. I wondered if Nathaniel and Sienna were still working, or if they’d finished. If Matthew would still be dead when I finally laid eyes on him. Whatever they were doing, there were no Residuals that I could see. If they were attempting to save him via magic, it wasn’t via any sort of magic I’d seen before.

I sailed over the front of the building, getting a glimpse of the vampires for the first time. Up close, their yellowed eyes were even more eerie than from afar. They looked nothing like Poppy, a cheerful, bubbling, blonde. Nor did they look like Matthew, a brooding, stunning, tall-dark-dangerous type.

These vampires looked distinctly human. Their faces were somewhat gaunt and pale, as if they were undernourished. Aside from their behavior and their yellow eyes, there was something so very average about them, which was wildly unsettling.

I took a moment to size up the battle. I counted ten people on the ground. Nine people sending clashes of magic out against the vampires. The vampires were attacking the borough with some sort of spell system I didn’t recognize. The Residuals of the vampires’ spells glittered black, and I had no doubt it was a spell that had originated in The Void.

I spotted one lone white wolf. Grey. It was there that I focused my attention. I hadn’t spotted Ranger X or Rob, and I tried not to wonder what that meant for the two men. Instead, I guided my broomstick down several paces behind Grey and focused on sticking my landing in a safe-enough zone.

While I descended, Grey remained in his Elderwolf form. But the second my feet hit the ground, he transformed, rising to his full height as he turned to face me.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to help,” I said. “I saw the building collapse, and—”

“Get inside,” Grey instructed.
